How To Get The “On Air” Mindset
If you are a self-published author and I ask you if you have a fear about doing a live webcast, what goes through your creative mind?
Most writers I speak with love the idea of doing a live webcast. However, 2 fears raise their ugly destructive heads.

What is he so excited about? What's in that box?
- What if I fumble and look foolish? How will I appear to my audience? (And many other thoughts that I am sure would be the basis for a horror-comedy novel. These are writers!). And…
- What if no one attends?
So 2 fears, one of the “I”, (how I will appear in my minds critical eye) and one focusing on what others will think. (their point of view)
First let me hand you the truth about performing “live” and then the solution that solves all your fears about the “You’re live in 3… 2… 1…” experience.
Everyone gets anxious: the producer, the on camera talent, the tech crew, and the investors (if you are fortunate to have one, but if you do add 2 points to your anxiety count.)
You may not believe me but it makes for an exciting and dynamic webcast. It does not matter what kind of webcast, be it as an author, CEO, small business owner or any presenter.
The thing is, once you have done a webcast, and measure your results, you have a starting point for doing it better the next time… no matter how well you did the first time.
It’s like the first line of a book that you are just starting. Look at what it can lead to. You have to start somewhere.
Also, keep in mind that most self published authors don’t do webcasts.. so you are a positioned to be a pioneer! (how’s that for even more anxiety… (oops, I mean excitement.)
OK… so how do you overcome the fear of “self criticism” and that of “nobody came”.
Passion and excitement!
What! That’s it?
Sorry, I’m NOT afraid so.
When I organized and did business events, mini trade shows with about 1,000 attendees in the early 2000’s, I was terrified! All the responsibility, speaking in front of all these people, selling the booths, and producing online on-demand webcasts. (They were really primitive because of the low-bandwidth back then).
However, I was so excited as the events took on more and more momentum. The exhibitors and attendees all felt they had to be there. Excitement is contagious.
Even when I stopped doing the events after 3 years, people who attended would ask when I would do another.. they really loved it! They claimed they had learned a lot and met new prospects and partners. These events had caused excitement and served up a good dose of learning that filled a void in many lives.
A live webcast is very similar, if you plan and more importantly you have strong reason to believe that your book (and you) is something to get excited about.
Do you have a good dose of belief in your book?
Are you passionate about your subject?
Why is your book going to be exciting to your future audience?
What void will you be filling in their lives?
Where is this audience and where do they hang-out online?
Answer these questions and get excited, because believe it or not they are out there and they are looking for you!
